‘Found’ Conversation

Conversation overheard between two beggars in Edinburgh, “ye can get Buckfast in cans noo ye ken!” For our foreign and our more innocent readers, this roughly translates as ‘did you know that it is possible to purchase Buckfast (a highly acoholic ‘tonic’ wine) in cans now?’ I still don’t quite know what to make of this conversation. At a superficial level it is slightly amusing – almost a music hall caricature of the conversation between Read more…

Spiritual DIY

There appears to be something of a theme developing amongst the intellectuals at the BBC. In May GospelBlog noted an article by Tom Shakespeare that posited the idea that the optimal solution for a happy life is to be religious while not believing in God. Today Will Self has joined this campaign. In his latest piece for A Point of View he has tackled the idea that Nihilism, essentially the belief that life is without meaning, Read more…

The Greatest Love

Like villages the length and breadth of the United Kingdom, the tiny agricultural hamlet of Craigton of Airlie has its war memorial commemorating the men of the parish who fell in the 1914-1918 war. Appallingly, for a cluster of houses that barely registers on Google Maps, this vanishingly small community commemorates nineteen local men who made the ultimate sacrifice. As the memorial stone says, “greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay Read more…

A War to End all Wars

Today is the 100th anniversary of the commencement of the conflict known, in its immediate aftermath, as ‘the Great War’ and, following the second great convulsion in Europe, as ‘the First World War’. The causes of this tragic spasm in world history has kept historians in gainful employment ever since: Although it seems unreasonable to place the blame entirely upon the skinny shoulders of Gavrilo Princip. The world that these events took place in seems Read more…

Moving the Goalposts

To my delight, and the considerable massaging of my ego, I discover that I can wear Slim-Fit shirts! Quite how this can be the case given that my current BMI only just squeezes below the ‘overweight’ category on the NHS Livewell site, I’m not quite sure. I’m equally sure that this transformation from ‘classic-fit’ to ‘slim-fit’ has been achieved without any significant change in my girth. Nonetheless, this is a major step and a moment Read more…

Forced Converts

Two stories in the media have caught my eye today. Firstly, the Sudanese lady, Meriam Yahia Ibrahim Ishag has thankfully been able to leave Sudan. Meriam, who was raised by her mother as a nominal christian was caught in an impossible situation when she was sentenced to death for adultery, despite having been legally married to her husband. According to the religious court in Sudan, because her father was a Muslim then she also was Read more…

Attaining Perfection

The City of Glasgow is rising steadily to fever pitch at it approaches the formal start to the 2014 Commonwealth Games this evening. The event will see athletes from across the world compete at the highest level – even if initial qualification is (largely) on the slightly dubious grounds of representing a former pink country on the map of the British Empire. The fact that so many countries will be represented is a reminder of Read more…
