Relative Morality

So the USA and the UK are, if not exactly friends, now on nodding acquaintance terms with Iran. Perhaps in the global quagmire of international relationships such pragmatic changes of direction are inevitable. Still, it seems we have come a long way from the “axis of evil” days!

If we are honest, are our own relationships any less pragmatic at times? We have all, at some time or another, had to change our position on some point of principle that we had previously held as inviolable. Often this is simply because we were wrong. Sometimes it is a reflection of the imperfect world we live in.

When we are dealing with God, however, there is no concept of relative morality. We are dealing with a divine person who is omniscient. His moral standards are absolute and inflexible. Fortunately this means that although He is inflexibly holy He is also inflexibly loving. While He holds us to account for our failures He also provides a means of escape. As the Apostle Paul puts it in Romans 3v26, “It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.”

If you opted out of the news for a few months you could well be forgiven for wondering if you had reentered into some parallel universe, such could be the changes of opinion in our political and/or religious leaders. Thankfully, you always know where you stand with God.
