An Effective Advocate

Many thanks to the young people at the Ballingry Gospel Hall Bible Class who have helped to formulate this blog entry.

This week we have all been astounded to see how the Government has been forced to completely rethink its strategy on the Gurkas following a highly publicised and forcefully presented campaign on their behalf by the actress Joanna Lumley. Even the notoriously taciturn Gordon Brown appears to have been completely won over by her charms!

I have no idea what arguments were used that were so persuasive – but it certainly highlights how important it is to have an effective advocate on your side. It is highly doubtful whether the Gurkas cause would have received anything like the attention it has had Joanna Lumley not become involved.

The parallel is not exact, but the Bible tells us that the Christian enjoys ” an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous” (1 John 2 v1). The context is ‘if any man sin’ – how important that the One who represents us before God in connection with this serious matter is ‘Jesus Christ the righteous’.

The big difference between Lumley’s lobbying of Government and the advocacy of the Lord Jesus is that there is no resistance at all from God the Father. He has declared His perfect satisfaction with His Son, as Paul says elsewhere,  “He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead” (Acts 17 v31).
