The Bible is full of practical lessons from nature, including the verse from Proverbs 6 that I have slightly amended for my title, “Go to the ant, you sluggard! Consider her ways and be wise”.
We are fortunate to live on a goose motorway, one of the main routes for migrating geese taking them to and from Loch Leven (beside Kinross), which lies just over the hill to our north.
Over the past few nights the sky above our house has been filled with the sight and, even after dark, the sound of thousands of geese heading north. Clearly the geese know that spring is on the way and they have already started on their massive journeys, many of them heading as far as Greenland, Iceland and northern Scandinavia. It is a sound that I love – it reminds me too that winter hasn’t got much longer to last!
If the geese didn’t act now, they wouldn’t reach their breeding grounds in time to find a mate, raise a brood and fatten up for the journey back South again as the cold Arctic winter closes in. They know that it is imperative to act while there is an opportunity.
This is a lesson that all of us could do to learn. The Bible says, ” Behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Cor 6 v2). Your opportunity to get right with God is now! The Lord Jesus spoke of a day when that door will be closed and it will be too late. Learn the lesson of the geese and make sure you act while there is an opportunity.
